Christian Counseling in Tacoma, WA: healing for your whole self

"I wanted the spiritual and emotional together."
That quote from a former client sums up what you're longing for. You want healing that reaches beyond behavior change or mental coping strategies. You want therapy that also honors your relationship with God. You're not just looking for support—you're looking for transformation that integrates your faith and your emotional well-being.

I like that you are a Christian counselor because I wanted to grow in my faith more. I wanted the spiritual and emotional together.

Maybe you're here because life feels heavy right now. You keep showing up, doing the right things, checking off your spiritual to-do list—but inside, you're running on empty. You long to feel close to God again, but prayer feels distant. You've tried to "pray it away," but the anxiety, sadness, or burnout lingers. You might even feel ashamed for struggling this much, wondering if you're doing something wrong.

You're not. You're human.

The message to be "strong in the Lord" can sometimes turn into pressure to hold it all together on the outside while falling apart inside. But you don't have to do this alone.

Faith-Based Therapy in tacoma, wa That Gets It

Tacoma Christian counseling

My name is Kate Hagborg, LMHC and I provide therapy in Tacoma, WA.

I'm Kate Hagborg, LMHC, and I provide Christian counseling in Tacoma, WA, for women who are ready to feel more confident, alive, and deeply connected—to themselves, to others, and to God.

Before becoming a licensed therapist, I spent nearly a decade in pastoral ministry on college campuses. That experience shaped my understanding of how deeply spiritual formation and emotional health intertwine. It also showed me how easy it is to burn out when you're trying to live up to a version of Christianity that emphasizes performance over presence.

I work with women who feel like they are stuck in a loop of emotional overwhelm, depression, anxiety, shame, or spiritual exhaustion. Many of my clients come in saying things like:

"I feel like I’m going through the motions in my faith. I miss feeling God’s presence." "I don’t even know how to pray anymore." "I thought if I had more faith, I wouldn’t be this anxious."

These are not signs of spiritual failure. They are invitations to a deeper, more honest kind of healing.

This is also a space that honors your full identity. I welcome people from all backgrounds, denominations, and belief systems, and I am LGBTQIA+ affirming. If you’ve ever felt like you had to hide a part of who you are to be accepted, know that you can show up fully here.

I also incorporate brainspotting and somatic work into therapy sessions, because healing trauma involves more than just talking. Our bodies hold pain, and part of our work together is helping your nervous system find regulation and safety again. Addressing trauma holistically—spiritually, emotionally, and physically—is essential for long-lasting healing.

Christian Counseling That Integrates Your Whole Self

Your relationship with God matters to you. So does your mental health. Christian counseling is a space where you don’t have to separate those things. It’s a place where your love for God and your need for emotional healing are both welcomed and honored.

In our work together, we might:

What to Expect from Christian Counseling in Tacoma, WA

From our first conversation, you can expect warmth, empathy, and curiosity. I’m not here to judge or tell you what your faith should look like. I’m here to help you get honest about what you’re feeling, what you need, and what you long for—spiritually and emotionally.

There’s not one-way to integrate your spirituality in session. We will create space for your full story, including how your spiritual beliefs shape your experiences. If you want to pray in session, we can. If you want to explore doubts or questions about God, that's welcome too. There's no spiritual script here—just authentic, healing conversations.

Together, we will:

  • Get curious about what your emotions are telling you

  • Heal from internalized shame and spiritual pressure

  • Integrate the body, mind, emotions and spirit for full, holistic healing

  • Explore new ways of connecting with God that feel authentic and nourishing

  • Rebuild your sense of self as someone worthy of love and rest

You Were Never Meant to Do This Alone

One of the biggest lies shame tells us is that we should be able to handle everything on our own—especially if we’re people of faith. But the truth is, God created us for connection, support, and rest. Therapy can be one of the ways you experience God's love in a tangible, healing way.

If you’ve been feeling:

  • Burned out and overwhelmed

  • Emotionally exhausted or spiritually numb

  • Caught in cycles of performance, people-pleasing, or perfectionism

  • Burdened by shame, anxiety, or depression

  • Longing to experience a peace that transcends your body, mind, soul, and spirit

You are not alone. And it’s okay to get help.

I’m Kate Hagborg, LMHC, and therapy can help you experience peace mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

Frequently Asked Questions About Christian counseling in Tacoma, WA

  • Absolutely not! I welcome and respect people across all belief systems. I will happily work with people who want to incorporate their faith, as well as those who want to keep that part of their life separate.

I am an affirming ally and safe space for members of the LGBTQIA+ community. I believe every person belongs in the family of God and deserves a spirituality that supports their thriving and authentic personhood.

  • Evaluating and assessing aspects of our faith should actually be a really normal and regular practice. When there are beliefs we’ve picked up along the way that might no longer be helping us anymore, it can be good to deconstruct those things.

Deconstruction can also feel like so many things—scary, lonely, disorienting, freeing, clarifying, helpful, or confusing. Having a safe and non-judgmental person to talk through things with and get support can make a big difference. You are welcome here.

  • Absolutely! If I could pick one thing that I believe is most essential for therapy to be successful, it is that you need to work with someone you trust and who you feel safe with. My hope is that no one I work with ever feels judged. This is deeply important to me.

My job as a therapist is to see you and accept you for who you are. All parts of you are welcome here and I will meet them with empathy and compassion.

Some of us have had the harmful experience of having the Bible used against us. That will never happen here. I’m not here to tell you how to interpret your faith—I’m here to support you in finding the most healthy, vibrant, and authentic expression of your faith to you.

I strive to create a safe space where everyone can be their most authentic selves. That means you can bring your questions and your doubts, and we will treat the tender and painful places in your life with gentleness and care.

  • Yes. I incorporate brainspotting and somatic work to help address trauma and regulate the nervous system, which are essential for healing the whole person.

Brainspotting is a body-based, trauma-focused therapy that helps access deep parts of the brain where emotional pain and trauma are stored. It’s particularly powerful because it doesn’t rely only on talk therapy or cognitive insight—your body leads the way toward healing. This is important because trauma isn’t just stored in our thoughts; it’s held in the body.

When combined with a faith-based approach, brainspotting allows for deeper healing that honors your spiritual values while supporting your nervous system and emotional recovery. It’s one way we support healing the whole person: body, mind, and spirit.

  • Christian counseling can be similar to “regular” talk therapy in many ways. But some people prefer working with someone who shares aspects of their spiritual belief system. If the Christian faith was or has been a big part of your life, it can be nice to work with someone who gets that world.

With my clients who want to incorporate their spirituality into sessions, that can look many different ways. For some, it’s nice just knowing their therapist understands or respects this part of their life. For others, we might weave in tools like listening prayer or part of your faith story into the counseling process. We can be flexible and incorporate your spirituality in a way that is most helpful for you.

  • We can incorporate your faith in whatever way is most supportive for you.

Some people find it helpful to use counseling to explore or support their spiritual journey, so we can talk about how your relationship with God, church, or ministry impacts your life. For some, their faith is one of their biggest support systems, so we can look at how your spiritual life can be a resource for you. We might use tools like listening prayer in our sessions.

For others, church has been a place of deep hurt, and they need a safe space with someone who understands that world but isn’t a part of their community to find healing. Together we can process trauma and help you heal from negative experiences.

Others find that their understanding of God or faith is changing, and they need a safe place to ask questions and explore. If you are deconstructing parts of your faith that no longer are helpful for you, counseling can be a safe place to do that.

Where ever you are in your spiritual journey, I want counseling to be a supportive place where all of you is welcomed.
