Kate Hagborg, MA, LMHC

You are ready to reach out and get support for you. You know that counseling would probably help, but you’re nervous about finding the right therapist. “Will I be judged? Will they understand me? What would I even talk about?”

I get it. I’ve been there, too.

you’re ready to feel more confident, alive, and fulfilled in your relationships.

My name is Kate Hagborg, LMHC, and I offer therapy in Tacoma, WA to help women get to the source of the anxiety and emotional overwhelm so they can enjoy fulfilling relationships with themself, others, and their spirituality.

I can be 100% honest with you and I have not felt like I could be that way with other therapists. This is the first time I’ve actually gotten to the root of some of these issues in therapy.”
— former client

My biggest goal is that the counseling relationship would be a compassionate, accepting, and warm relationship where you can safely explore sources of shame that need to be healed. In this therapeutic context, you can practice cultivating self-compassion and learn to love yourself in a new way. For clients who wish to, we can weave your spirituality into sessions, allowing you to tap into all of your resources and help you heal in a holistic way that is most true to you.

what to expect in counseling.

Most people come into a first therapy session feeling nervous, but the large majority of women I work with describe feeling so relieved after the first session to be able to share their story and know that they are not alone in it.

The first couple of sessions will be focused on getting to hear the big picture of your story and the specifics about the pain points that are your top priorities to address. We will also get specific and dream about what you want your life to look like as these areas are healed. This will help us set concrete goals that will guide our work and help you see progress along the journey.

A major focus in my work is helping you to see and celebrate your strengths as part of your process. We will not always focus on “what’s wrong” since many of my clients are aware they are their own biggest critics. But I will help you to see with fresh eyes all the things that are right about you! And I will help you bring these strengths to the table to address the areas of life that need adjustments.

my approach to therapy in tacoma, wa

My approach to mental health counseling is eclectic and tailored to fit each person's unique needs.  I enjoy helping women connect to their inner source of creativity, strength, passion, and spirituality as resources for healing.  I am particularly passionate about helping women overcome the impact of trauma mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

I am trained in Brainspotting therapy (similar to EMDR), which is a gentle, body-based therapeutic method that heals without re-traumatizing.  Many of my clients have found this approach to be effective for overcoming anxiety, depression, abuse, neglect, PTSD symptoms, and relational issues, such as codependency or trouble bonding with others.

For clients who identify with Christian spirituality, I offer Christian counseling that incorporates a faith-based perspective with the other trauma-informed tools I describe above.  I value and am accepting of all forms of spirituality and effectively work with people from diverse beliefs and backgrounds.  My goal is to help you work within your beliefs and framework to help you truly love yourself and the life you are living.

my background.

I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in NC in 2007 with a BA in English Literature.  I worked for 8 years as a college campus pastor and I still have a passion for helping college students and young adult women who want to make a transition in life to pursue their dreams.

I made some of my own major life transitions in my late 20's and decided to go back to school to study to be a counselor so I could go deeper in helping people find healing and breakthrough from negative life cycles.  Counseling helped me personally heal from root issues of shame, address anxiety and depression cycles, and learn to be myself more authentically in my relationships. I have been there personally and know what it’s like to struggle with things like people-pleasing, panic attacks, religious burnout, depression, and more. I’m passionate about people experiencing healing and transformation as I have and find emotional freedom.

I graduated with my Master's of Counseling Psychology from Northwest University, in Kirkland, WA in 2016. Since then I have worked in a variety of settings, with women experiencing homelessness, a community mental health clinic, the K-12 school system, and with fostering and adoptive families. I have been a therapist in Tacoma, WA in private practice since 2018.

When I'm not working, I enjoy hanging out in Tacoma coffee shops, doing improv comedy, hanging with my pup, pursuing my secret dream of being a children’s book author, and playing pickleball.
